SEATTLE– Four years ago, Teresa Mosqueda made history as the first, first-time candidate to win election using Seattle’s landmark Democracy Voucher program. Monday this week, Councilmember Mosqueda officially filed for office once again leading the pack of City Council candidates in Democracy Voucher collection and broad support for her re-election. Mosqueda has to date raised $165,835 total to date with 4,410 Democracy Vouchers and an average contribution of $48 from a diverse cross section of the Seattle electorate. Her closest competitor has raised around $5,000 as of May 10, further underscoring Seattle’s support for Mosqueda’s leadership and bolstering her re-election chances.
I’m grateful for the broad support from across our diverse city as we enter the race for the primary election,” said Mosqueda. “Building a stronger, more equitable and healthy Seattle as we emerge from the COVID crisis is my top priority. The progress we are making every day — from building more affordable housing to supporting small businesses and workers — is just the beginning of what we must do together to address income inequality, homelessness and economic stability for all as these are the most pressing issues in our city .”
As a bridge from her first term to the work ahead on COVID recovery, Mosqueda points to passage of JumpStart Seattle, historic legislation which established the most progressive payroll tax in Seattle history, and generating over $214 million a year over the next two decades to support robust housing solutions, economic resilience, Green New Deal investments and direct services to those who need them the most. In addition, she has championed policies to build more affordable housing on publicly owned land, sponsored the Domestic Workers Bill of Rights and the suite of Hotel Worker protections to guarantee healthcare, safety, and protection from retaliation and harassment.
As Chair of the Finance & Housing Committee, Mosqueda is leading discussions on the allocation of funding from the American Rescue Plan Act following robust deliberations, and previously led the COVID relief package in 2020. The COVID relief package included direct support for small businesses, rental assistance, immigrant and refugee support, food security, and childcare. During this COVID crisis, Mosqueda led the passage of legislation to support low-wage workers by expanding emergency paid & sick leave and a guaranteed minimum wage for app-based drivers, championed the passage of hazard pay for grocery workers, and partners to support hospitality workers and businesses. Mosqueda’s commitments center on dispersing funds directly into the hands of those hardest hit by COVID – communities of color, low-income workers, small businesses, artists, unsheltered neighbors, vulnerable seniors and children – and in longer term solutions that build housing, equity and economic resilience.
“Over the next weeks and months we have the opportunity to truly make a difference in the lives of Seattle residents historically left out and left behind in our incredible track record of prosperity and growth,” said Mosqueda. “Addressing the unacceptable and unsustainable gaps in wealth, access to education and opportunity, and family security– all made worse during the pandemic– can only happen with strong, progressive leadership. A recovery that works for all the people of Seattle will help create a future that works for all of us as well.”
As she approaches election to a second term, Mosqueda is running on a progressive platform building on her track record and focus on housing affordability and homelessness, equitable economic growth, and investments in healthy and safe communities.
