Seattle Councilmember Teresa Mosqueda running for King County Council

SEATTLE — Seattle City Councilmember Teresa Mosqueda announced Thursday that she will run for the King County Council District 8 seat.Mosqueda, a Democrat and West Seattle resident, seeks to replace retiring King County Councilmember Joe McDermott.In a press release, Mosqueda cited a “growing regional need to address displacement and build workforce housing, invest in public health and behavioral health, and support for working families and small businesses with affordable childcare, accessible transit, and job training” as motivation to run for King County Council.Mosqueda is one of two at-large Seattle City Council members, meaning they are elected by and represent the entire city. She was elected to Seattle City Council in Nov. 2017 and currently serves as the council’s budget chair.“I am running for King County Council District 8 to improve the opportunity for working families to be healthy, housed and resilient,” said Mosqueda. “We can do this by investing in greater behavioral health and public health supports, expanding housing and displacement efforts that makes it possible for people to stay stably housed, and investing in what working families and small businesses need - affordable childcare, accessible transit, and good job opportunities.”In December, Seattle City Councilmember Lisa Herbold announced she would not seek reelection in 2023. Herbold, who has more than two decades of political experience, wrote in her blog about how she wants to create an open seat election in District 1. She continued to say that she believes an open seat can assist in voter turnout to deliver District 1 another progressive candidate.In early January, Seattle Councilmember Alex Pedersen announced he would not seek reelection for his District 4 seat.Weeks later, Seattle Councilmember Kshama Sawant also announced she would not seek reelection.
